Under the surface

The cross-section.

Turf is only as good as what's underneath it. Tap a tier below to see how base depth changes — and why it costs what it costs.

Standard base

1" of fines topped with 2" of compacted road base — our baseline for flat, well-draining yards. The road base is what actually carries the load and holds your grade; the fines layer just gives it a smooth, screed-able top.

Road base: 2"

Why compacted road base matters: more road base means more structural depth to grade slope and elevation into, so the surface holds its shape instead of settling or dipping over time — this matters even more on a putting green, where a max subbase lets us build real contour and break into the green.

Drainage: the engineered base is built to drain fully within minutes of rainfall — no standing water, no mud, no mosquito pools, even after a heavy storm.
